Rejection of Hadiths Contrary to the Madhhab of Ahl al-Bayt

Within the methodological framework (uṣūl) of Imam Yahya al-Hadi ila al-Haqq (d. 298 AH), reports attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, were not accepted simply because they appeared in well-known hadith collections. If a report contradicted the transmitted madhhab and inherited teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt, these reports became contested.
One clear example appears in Kitab al-Muntakhab wa yalihi Kitab al-Funun regarding marriage while in the state of Ihram (pilgrim sanctity).

Imam Yahya al-Hadi was asked:

“What if a pilgrim were to marry while in the state of pilgrim sanctity?”

He replied:

“His marriage is invalid and annulled.”

The questioner then mentioned the famous narration that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, married Maymuna bt. al-Harith while in Ihram. Imam al-Hadi responded:

“This hadith is false and a lie upon Allah’s Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. We do not hold that the Muhrim may contract marriage.”

What makes this significant is that the narration appears in many major Sunni hadith collections, including Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Nasa’i, Sunan Abi Dawud, and Musnad Ahmad. Despite this, Imam Yahya al-Hadi rejected the report because it contradicted the transmitted teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt.
