The Zaydi View On Tarāwīḥ

‎It is Permitted to Pray Tarāwīḥ, so long as it is not Considered to be from the Sunnah.

‎Imām Majd al-Dīn al-Muʾayyadī said:

‎”Amīr al-Muʾminīn, peace be upon him, initially permitted the Tarāwīḥ prayer when they didn’t consider it to be of the Sunnah. This is because he did not deem it lawful to ever prohibit prayer, and would recite His saying, the Exalted, in not prohibiting some units of prayer which were not specifically legislated according to him: {Have you seen the one who forbids [9] A servant when he prays?} [al-ʿAlaq: 9-10].

‎When he came to know that it became to be considered a Sunnah, and the people were adamant upon it, he forbade it. This is because to believe a matter is a Sunnah, when it isn’t a Sunnah is heresy.

‎However, if one does not believe it is a Sunnah from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. Then, there is no issue in participating in it. Hence, ʿAbdullāh b. al-Ḥasan would partake in it.

‎His grandson ʿAbdullāh b. Mūsā, peace be upon them, said: Those who I encountered from my family would pray it.

‎al-Qāsim b. Ibrāhīm, peace be upon him, said: “I would pray it,” meaning he would pray it with his family, while he, peace be upon him, would say: “We are unaware of it,” meaning we don’t know of it being a Sunnah.

‎And he said: It has been reported from ʿAlī, peace be upon him, that he prohibited that – i.e to pray it as a Sunnah – otherwise, his statement and action would have been contradictory.

‎Likewise, al-Ḥasan b. Yaḥyā, peace be upon them, he mentioned the consensus of the Ahl al-Bayt that it isn’t a Sunnah from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, or from Amīr al-Muʾminīn, peace be upon him, and that he prohibited it – at the end – when he came to know that they would say regarding it: It is a Sunnah.

‎This understanding is the correct one, and it is the fairest of statements. Namely, it is not a Sunnah from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, and it is permitted for one to participate in it, so long as it is not believed, or said to be a Sunnah.”
