The Imam whose faith was not established! Muhammad ibn Ja‘far al-Ṣādiq, and the sons of the Imams (God forbid)

Imam al-Dībāj Muhammad ibn Ja‘far al-Ṣādiq ibn Muhammad al-Bāqir ibn ‘Ali ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ‘Ali ibn Abi Ṭālib (peace be upon him)—his faith was not established according to the statements of Imami scholars, including later ones. Likewise, the sons of their Imams who were Zaydi, and the criticism directed at them—this is an intellectual illumination guiding you to read other issues through which you will understand where the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) stand, and the nature of rejecting the Imams of the Prophet’s progeny and their revolutions. Thus, the post is intellectual, not incitement; it is directed primarily at researchers.

Imam Muhammad ibn Ja‘far al-Ṣādiq ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ‘Ali ibn Abi Ṭālib (peace be upon him).

Imam ‘Abdullah ibn Ja‘far al-Ṣādiq ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ‘Ali ibn Abi Ṭālib (peace be upon him).

Imam Dhu al-Dam‘ah al-Ḥusayn ibn Zayd ibn ‘Ali ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ‘Ali ibn Abi Ṭālib (peace be upon him), the foster-son of al-Ṣādiq.

Sayyid al-Khoei said, speaking about Imam Muhammad ibn Ja‘far (peace be upon him):

“Indeed, the faith of this man has not been established, let alone his reliability; and no praise has been reported about him except what al-Mufid—may God sanctify his soul—mentioned, that he was generous and brave, and this praise has no bearing on what we are discussing.”
[Mu‘jam Rijāl al-Ḥadīth, 16/176]

And Shaykh al-Mufid said about him:

“He held the Zaydi view regarding rising with the sword … and the Jarudi Zaydis followed him.”
[Al-Irshād, 2/212]

And Shaykh Hasan al-Amin said:

“And more astonishing is that two of the sons of Imam Ja‘far ibn Muhammad himself inclined toward Zaydism—namely ‘Abdullah and Muhammad. The first went out with al-Nafs al-Zakiyyah and was accused of opposing his father, and he called people to himself after him; it is said that he associated with the Hashwiyyah, and he had followers known as the Fathiyyah. The second revolted against al-Ma’mun in Mecca in the year 199 AH, and the Jarudi Zaydis supported him.”
[Mustadrakāt A‘yān al-Shī‘ah, 1/71]

Regarding Imam Dhu al-Dam‘ah al-Ḥusayn ibn Zayd, it is stated that he went out with—according to the Imamis—the Imam al-Nafs al-Zakiyyah Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah (peace be upon him), pledging allegiance to him. Shaykh Hasan al-Amin said:

“At the forefront of those who pledged allegiance to al-Nafs al-Zakiyyah were two of the most famous sons of Zayd ibn ‘Ali: ‘Isa Mu’atham al-Ashbāl and al-Ḥusayn Dhu al-‘Abrah; and after Muhammad’s killing, they joined his brother Ibrahim, the rebel, in Iraq.”
[Mustadrakāt A‘yān al-Shī‘ah, 1/71]

May God make you prosper.

O God, send prayers and peace upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad.
