Conditions for the Acceptance of Du’a (Supplication)

Know that Allah Almighty has commanded us to supplicate and has promised to respond, as He said:

“Call upon Me; I will respond to you.” (Ghafir 40:60)
“Ask Allah of His bounty.” (An-Nisa 4:32)
“Seek refuge in Allah.” (Al-A‘raf 7:200)

But a supplication is not complete unless the servant realizes his own inability to benefit himself or ward off harm, and that he is in constant need of Allah’s help and grace. He must also know that Allah is capable of all things and knows everything.

When the servant understands that no benefit or protection comes except from his Lord—Who is never incapable and from Whom nothing is hidden—his heart turns sincerely toward asking, with humility, submission, and reverence.

He then says: “I ask Allah and seek refuge in Allah,” knowing that Allah’s knowledge and power encompass all things, and trusting His promise. Thus, he directs his request solely to his Lord, cutting all hope from others, dedicating his supplication purely to Him—as Allah has commanded:

“You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.” (Al-Fatiha 1:5)

From the narrations of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), Imam Ali (peace be upon him) narrated from the Prophet ﷺ:

Allah Almighty says: “No creature seeks refuge in another creature instead of Me except that I cut off the means of the heavens and the earth from him. If he asks Me, I will not grant him; if he calls upon Me, I will not answer him. But whoever seeks refuge in Me instead of My creation, I guarantee his sustenance from the heavens and the earth. If he calls upon Me, I will answer him; if he asks Me, I will grant him; and if he seeks My forgiveness, I will forgive him.”

And Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said in his advice to his son Hasan (peace be upon him):

“Entrust all your affairs to your Lord, for you will be entrusting them to a strong protector and a mighty refuge.” (Nahj al-Balagha)

Al-Qasim ibn Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said:

“Hold fast to Allah’s unbreakable protection. Seek His guidance to the path that saves from destruction. Ask Him for success in following His guidance and a great share in obedience to Him. Desire from Him inspiration with wisdom and avoidance of sin.”

All of this shows that a servant attains no good or blessing—neither in his religion nor in his worldly life—except through the help of Allah. Supplication (du‘ā) is the means to attract all benefit and repel all harm, in this world and the next.
