How Legitimate Leadership Is Measured

Imam Zayd viewed leadership in Islam not as a mere political authority or class privilege, but as a religious duty and a divine trust. He emphasized that legitimate leadership is measured by its commitment to establishing justice, removing oppression, and supporting the oppressed. In his famous call, he declared:
“We invite you, O people, to the Book of God and the Sunnah of His Prophet… to strive against the oppressors, to defend the oppressed, to give to the deprived, to distribute wealth fairly among its rightful recipients, and to restore rights that have been unjustly taken…”

Through this foundational statement of his movement, Imam Zayd defined the role of a leader: to support the weak, to ensure just distribution of wealth, and to stand against oppressors. Such a role can only be fulfilled by an enlightened, just, and sincere leadership that governs in accordance with the Book of God and the Sunnah of His Messenger.
