Prohibition of Nikah al-Muta (Mutah Marriage) in the Zaydi School

According to the Zaydī school, nikāḥ al-mutʿa (temporary marriage) is prohibited by consensus on the authority of the Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt.

Imam al-Muʾayyad Billah Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Harūnī al-Ḥasanī (d. 479 AH) writes:

“Imam al-Hādī ila’l-Ḥaqq Yaḥyā (d. 298 AH) states that nikāḥ al-mutʿa is ḥarām. This type of marriage occurs between a man and woman for a set period of time.

Imam al-Hādī ila’l-Ḥaqq Yaḥyā, within his work entitled al-Aḥkām fī al-Ḥalāl wa’l-Ḥarām, has also transmitted its prohibition on the authority of his grandfather, Imam al-Qāsim al-Rassī (d. 246 AH).

Additionally, its prohibition has been transmitted by Imam Nāṣir al-Aṭrūsh (d. 304 AH)—as well as the entirety of the Zaydī school.”
