The Fiqh of Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq in the Zaydi Tradition

The Zaydi madhhab holds a long and rich tradition of preserving and transmitting the jurisprudence (fiqh) of the Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt. Among these luminaries is Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq (d. 148 AH), whose legal opinions and teachings are deeply respected within the Zaydi school.

Contrary to some claims, the Zaydis have never shown favoritism toward one member of the ‘itra (the Prophet’s Household) over another. Instead, they have preserved the contributions of all the Imams, including Imam Ja‘far, whose fiqh is recorded and transmitted through authoritative Zaydi works.

Notable examples include:

• Ra’ab as-Sad‘ by Imam Ahmad ibn Isa ibn Zayd (d. 247 AH).
• Al-Jāmi‘ al-Kāfī fī Fiqh az-Zaydiyyah by Imam al-Hafid Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Hasan al-‘Alawi al-Kufi (d. 445 AH).

These works, among others, demonstrate that the jurisprudence of Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq occupies an integral place in the Zaydi legal tradition. The preservation of his fiqh within Zaydi scholarship underscores the madhhab’s commitment to honoring the legacy of all the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt, without partiality.
