Al-Mahatwary on infallibility
The belief in the infallibility of the Five of the Cloak (the Prophet, ‘Ali, Fatima, Hasan, and Husayn) is not the same as the Prophet’s own unique infallibility (peace be upon him). Rather, it is akin to the purification mentioned in the Qur’anic verse:
Indeed, Allah desires to remove defilement from you, O People of the House, and to purify you thoroughly.” [Al-Ahzab: 33]
This means simply that ‘Ali, Fatima, and the two grandsons were protected from committing sins — nothing more.
