Imam al-Ḥusayn ibn Zayd

Peace Be Upon Him

Full Lineage

Al-Ḥusayn ibn Zayd ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Sibt (peace be upon them).

Upbringing

His father, the Greatest Imam Zayd ibn ʿAlī, was martyred while he was young. Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon them) raised him.

Death

Year 140 AH per Ṭabaqāt al-Zaydiyya — though the more likely date, given his presence at the Battle of al-Nafs al-Zakiyyah in 145 AH, is around 190 AH.

His Life & Call

Imam al-Ḥusayn ibn Zayd ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Sibt (peace be upon them). He called people to God after the killing of Imam al-Mahdī Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdullāh al-Nafs al-Zakiyyah, and he was present at that battle. His father, the Greatest Imam Zayd ibn ʿAlī, was martyred while he was still young — so Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon them) raised him and took charge of his upbringing.

A Scholarly Note on the Date of His Death

There is a divergence among scholars regarding the year of his death. The author notes that the date given in Ṭabaqāt al-Zaydiyya cannot be correct in light of his established presence at the battle of Imam Muḥammad al-Nafs al-Zakiyyah in 145 AH — which falls after the year 140.

Scholarly Divergence — Year of Death
Reported — but not accepted

Year 140 AH — as stated in Ṭabaqāt al-Zaydiyya. The author rejects this, as he was documented to be present at the battle of al-Nafs al-Zakiyyah in year 145 AH.

More likely — accepted

Around year 190 AH — as given in Al-Taqrīb and Al-Khulāṣa. This is consistent with his known activities after 145 AH.
