Peace Be Upon Him

Full Lineage

Al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥamza ibn ʿUbaydullāh ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn (peace be upon them).

His Era

During the days of al-Mustaʿīn the ʿAbbāsid.

Textual Note

The name ʿUbaydullāh (diminutive) in his lineage is the correct reading — as against ʿAbdullāh (full form) found in some manuscripts of Al-Maqātil.

His Identity

Imam al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥamza ibn ʿUbaydullāh1 ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn (peace be upon them). This was during the days of al-Mustaʿīn the ʿAbbāsid.

The Two Sons of al-Ḥusayn al-Aṣghar ibn Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn

Al-Ḥusayn al-Aṣghar (the Younger), son of Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn, had two sons whose descendants appear repeatedly in the genealogical record of this era:

ʿAbdullāh — the full form
  • Father of Imam al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbdullāh — mentioned in the commentary on “And to al-Qāsim, the well-pleasing one…”
ʿUbaydullāh — the diminutive
  • Father of Ḥamza — grandfather of this Imam al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad
  • Father of ʿAlī ibn ʿUbaydullāh — to whom Imam Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm made his bequest
  • Father of Jaʿfar al-Ḥujja — mentioned among the companions of Imam al-Qāsim ibn Ibrāhīm

In Al-Maqātil the name reads ʿAbdullāh; but the correct reading is ʿUbaydullāh — as in the original text. Al-Ḥusayn al-Aṣghar, son of Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn, had two sons: ʿAbdullāh (the full, un-diminutive form) — who is the father of Imam al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbdullāh, mentioned earlier in the commentary on “And to al-Qāsim, the well-pleasing one…”; and ʿUbaydullāh (the diminutive form) — the father of the aforementioned Ḥamza; and the father of ʿAlī ibn ʿUbaydullāh mentioned earlier, to whom Imam Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm made his bequest designating him successor; and the father of Jaʿfar al-Ḥujja, mentioned earlier among the companions of Imam al-Qāsim ibn Ibrāhīm — noted by the Author (peace be upon him).
