The Imāms of the Ahl al-Bayt and Their Loyalty to Their Followers

Al-Sibṭ Ibn al-Jawzī narrates that when the army of al-Manṣūr besieged Madīna, Imām Muḥammad al-Nafs al-Zakīyya ❪؏❫ had no greater concern than to burn a registry containing the names of those who had pledged allegiance to him and written to him.

After burning it, he declared:

“Now death is welcome. Had I not done this, the people would have suffered greatly. If these names had fallen into the hands of the ʿAbbāsids, they would have killed them.”

A similar event occurred with his noble brother, the leader of Daylam, Imām Yaḥyā b. ʿAbdullāh ❪؏❫, who chose to die of hunger and thirst rather than reveal to Hārūn the names of his seventy companions.

This was the way of the Ahl al-Bayt ❪؏❫ — a living tradition of sacrifice, loyalty, and protection. Each of them gave their blood, their souls, and their very lives to shield their companions, followers, and supporters from tyranny. They did not hesitate to stand against oppression, nor did they allow harm to reach those who had trusted and followed them.

Contrast with the Imāmī Narrative

Now, contrast this historical reality with what certain sects — the later Rāfiḍa — have said about these valiant Imāms. Instead of honoring their courage, they curse them, despite the fact that these men openly opposed the enemies of Allāh and suffered in His cause.

By contrast, the Imāmī tradition describes its own supposed “Imāms” as figures who did nothing but curse from behind closed doors, avoiding confrontation, and leaving their followers in perpetual confusion. They present to the Ummah leaders who allegedly carried a secret “Naṣ” from Allāh and His Messenger ﷺ, yet even their own partisans disputed, doubted, and disagreed about this claim. These alleged “Imāms” could not even transmit a coherent book of guidance for their people.

What Did This Tradition Contribute?

What did this Imāmī narrative ultimately contribute to the Ummah?

• Confusion rather than clarity.
• Misguidance rather than truth.
• Alienation of Muslims from the true legacy of the Ahl al-Bayt ❪؏❫.

Meanwhile, the true Imāms of the Prophet’s Household ❪؏❫ left behind a legacy of courage, sacrifice, and loyalty that benefited the entire Ummah — a legacy recorded in history, lived in reality, and proven by their blood.
